0day discovery System level access by Privilege Escalation of Huawei manufactured Airtel & Photon Dongles

A few months back i found a vulnerability in Huawei Manufactured dongles that were run by Airtel and Photon datacards below is the detail for the same.

Huawei Unified Terminal PC suite (UTPS), also known as Mobile Partner, runs on the PC side to manage data cards. It provides data card setting, dial-up setting, message sending and receiving, and contacts management functions.
Huawei UTPS has an unquoted service path vulnerability which can lead to the truncation of UTPS service query paths. An attacker may put an executable file in the search path of the affected service and obtain elevated privileges after the executable file is executed. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-09012)
This vulnerability has been assigned a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2016-8769.
Huawei has released software updates to fix this vulnerability.

So what exactly was the vulnerabiltiy:

Remember when a user inserts a dongle on the laptop or PC , the auto installer installs the setup of the data card to insert. The same software was not configured with proper installation. when we look at the service path of the software installed it is not sanitized with quotes which resulted in the flaw. As an attacker if a malicious file is placed in the C drive with the name Program.exe the file will get executed because of improper sanitization on every system restart. Resulting in giving the attacker total compromise over the system. As a researcher the same was successfully produced to Huawei and the vulnerability was accepted for the misconfigured Airtel and Photon dongles. The vulnerability affects more than million devices each by the Photon and Airtel providers.

To have an understanding of Privilege escalation, have a look at one of my previous Blog post. Here

The attacker could run an executable file to obtain elevated privileges on the system.

Vulnerability Scoring details:-

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv3 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

Base Score: 6.4 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)

Temporal Score: 5.9 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

I will soon be uploading the video of POC for the same , cannot do right now due to disclosure reasons.
